Open Day - Bishop Creighton House

Fulham WI has been asked to publicise the upcoming open day at Bishop Creighton House. Details below:

Bishop Creighton House runs a range of serives for people in Hammersmith & Fulham, including a community centre, home safety and security projects, a home improvement agency and projects that look after the needs of older people, children and young people with learning disabilities.

Saturday 11th July, 11am - 3pm, free admission and activities

Everyone welcome!

Come and find out what we do in your community and see how our projects can help make your home safer and more secure.

Bishop Creighton House, 378 Lillie Road, SW6 7PH www.creightonhouse.org

History - Bishop Creighton House was set up in 1908 and began by running play centres and support groups for children and families in Hammersmith & Fulham. Through two world wars and the devastating effect of a bombing raid on our premises in Lillie Road, the work of BCH has continued unabated. Today, 100 years on, BCH works with children, families, people with learning disabilities and older people, promoting independent living and improving lives across Hammersmith & Fulham.

Disability Services - if you have a learning disability and live in Hammersmith & Fulham, the Mentoring and Workwise projects may be able to help you. Whatever your goal in life - whether it is getting a job, living on your own, travelling independently, building confidence, meeting new people or trying new things - our staff and team of trained volunteer mentors can help and support you to realise your full potential.

Independent living - Do you feel safe and secure at home? We have a number of projects to enable older and disabled people to remain independent and well at home. We can help in many different ways, offering a range of free or low cost help and advice. If you spend a lot of your time on your own, we can provide daily phone calls or regular visits from our volunteers. If you are in need of practical help, our handymen can change lightbulbs, fit new locks and undertake a range of small jobs. Larger works, such as installing an accessible bathroom or carrying out essential repairs can be arranged. We can also provide equipment to prevent accidents in the homes of older people and families with small children.

Community centre - seven days a week, from 9am to 10pm, our building is open for use by local people. We run our own groups - our weekly art, bridge, leisure and social clubs for older people help meet the social needs of the local community. Affordable offices and meeting space can be hard to find and BCH offers help to a network of groups and organisations.

Please contact us for more information about our services.

JULY SPEAKER

"Women Hiring Men - A Male Escort Perspective"
Fulham WI will be welcoming John to speak to us on this controversial subject.

John is a seasoned male escort who featured in a TV documentary last year and runs his own business www.claretknight.co.uk He intends to provide us with a holistic view of the escort business covering both the reasons why women hire escorts – and what this actually means – as well as the effect hiring an escort has on clients. We will also hear from the escorts perspective on how his work affects him – and the ups and downs of their business.

Questions are of course welcomed!

Please note that at John’s request no photography or press will be allowed.

In addition, bring your cheque books for Innovative Jewellery from Patricia Asare

Patricia is Polish/Ghanaian and was brought up in Ghana until she was 18, when she moved to Poland to do her Masters in International Relations. She moved to London in 2001 and has woas a nanny, assistant kindergarten teacher and an office manager. Patricia’s mother has a great passion for beads and jewellery which has finally rubbed onto her! She can’t get enough of jewellery making now and is delighted to be coming to display her wares at our July meeting. For a sneak preview please have a look at: www.patriciaasare.com

FWI PRESIDENT AND COMMITTEE

As the WI constitution decrees, all committee members who have been on the committee for three years (or more) have to stand down. Therefore at the end of September Joanna and myself will be stepping down as the co-presidents and there will also be a number of vacancies on the committee to fill. Some committee members would like to stay on but this is also a time for new blood and your chance to be involved in the running of the FWI. We will be looking for a committee of 7 people for roles including: President, Treasurer, Membership, Events, IT and Speaker Co-ordinator

We will be asking for nominations by the August meeting and then there will be a chance for every FWI member to have a say in who they want as the President/on the committee with voting taking place at the September meeting.

If this is something you would like to be involved in/have any questions about please email fulhamwi@gmail.com … it’s a fantastic opportunity and I have certainly enjoyed my time on the committee.

EVENTS
•    FWI Book Club – Tuesday, June 30 at The Peterborough
We have chosen to read The Return by Victoria Hislop. We plan to discuss from 7.30 onwards.

•    Cartier International Polo – Sunday, July 26

Patchi & Flaxi's Cushions!

Ally's cushion 009

Patchi’s and Flaxi’s

Do you remember Natalie’s Cushions? Natalie kindly attended our December meeting with a wonderful display of her wares. She has recently renamed her cushion company Patchi’s and Flaxi’s. Natalie makes hand-made cushions by mixing and matching fabrics with clashing colours and textures, such as silks, wools, velvets and felts, and she often adds beads, buttons and sequins. She can make fun cushions out of your old clothes and put your friends’ names on them. She can also make any cushion with any colour, any texture, to any size, and send it anywhere ... Some of her cushions have already been sent to

Ireland

,

Malta

,

Canada

and

Australia

. Give her the design and she will make it! Natalie is obsessed with fabrics and feels each cushion she makes is made with positive energy and karma behind it, and gives something back to her community, since it is usually a gift for a loved one.

You can see more of her cushions at Parson's Green Fair on Saturday 4th July, at Cleaver Square Village Fete on Sunday 12th July 2009 and on some Sundays at Spitalfields Market in

East London

.

The Patchis’ and Flaxi’s website is coming soon so watch this space! For now you can see her cushions on Etsy’s online hand-made store at www.tinyurl.com/patchisandflaxis

Feel free to contact Natalie even if you require formal scatter cushions at natchalaby@hotmail.com or on her mobile 07532282058.

June Speakers:

Henrietta Lovell – the ultimate Tea Lady!

Henrietta lovell She’s been called a couturier of tea – but Henrietta Lovell believes that fine tea should not be for the privileged few. Henrietta’s passion for tea began when she had to travel to China for work. Now a champion of the delights and range of teas from silver tip white tea to rarest oolong, Henrietta has just become Selfridge’s consultant on fine teas; she also runs the Rare Tea Company and is the proud winner of the 2009 Observer Food Monthly Award for best Independent Retailer. Henrietta will be joining us to discuss the art of making the perfect cup of tea; what to drink if you want to keep up your anti-oxidants but keep down your caffeine; and to explore the subtle possibilities that tea can offer.
