Received a mail from a member who noticed that the June FWI meeting will be on World Environment Day. ![]()
Bearing in mind we have submitted an application for a 'Green Grant' she suggested that maybe we would like to fill in some pledge cards (see online example and more info ) which she can provide along with some promotional pencils and posters, etc. to get into the spirit of the day. I think this is a great idea, I hope others agree with me. I even turned off the tap whilst I was brushing my teeth last night and this morning after going on the website -small fry you may think - but imagine how much water would be saved if the whole country made an environmental pledge and kept it, even just for one day?
Thank you all ladies for filling in the cards (and a really interesting meeting). As Lucy commented to me earlier I think quite a few of us will be turning off the taps tonight while we clean our teeth! If you didn't get the chance though you can still visit the website (above). I think environmental issues can make people feel a bit overwhelmed because of the scale of the problems, but the difference even one person can make is astonishing really. One example (in a hopefully non-cheesy way) is Wangari Maathi- the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Winner whose Green Belt movement educates poor rural women in order to break the cycle of poverty and environmental damage. So far they have planted 30 million trees across Kenya- thus restoring their source of fuel for cooking, combating deforestation and preventing soil erosion.
