Article from the NFWI website:
During the festive period, people living in the UK produce enough
waste to fill 400,000 double-decker buses! Up to one billion Christmas
cards are thrown away and more than 125,000 tonnes of plastic packaging
ends up in rubbish bins.
With this in mind, the NFWI has produced some tips on how to reduce your waste this Christmas:
- Buy gifts without excessive packaging
- Recycle your Christmas tree, purchase one with roots so it can be replanted or buy an artificial tree
- Re-use wrapping paper from last year or find some colourful pictures from magazines and make a collage over newspaper wrapping
- Reuse and recycle your waste
- Instead of ribbons use flowers or holly to decorate presents
There are also many ways to reduce your energy consumption over Christmas:
- Plant a Christmas tree in your garden to help offset CO2 emissions
- Turn Christmas lights off overnight and when not at home
- Turn the heating thermostat down by 1 degree and cut 10% off heating bills
- Turn all electrical equipment off when not in use - do not leave them on standby
- Keep the lids on saucepans - sprouts will cook quicker and energy will be saved
- Ensure any left over food is cooled before it goes in the fridge as this will help save energy.
