FWI August Meeting: Home Jane!

Home Jane will be coming to speak at tonight's meeting- with plently of opportunity to get to know other FWI members over a glass of Pinot Grigio afterwards!

Home Jane are an improvement and property maintenance company, specialising in providing female tradespeople, They have an all-female team of professional tradeswomen covering a range of fields, including-but not limited to-plumbing, electrics, decorating, interior design and even plastering (a notoriously difficult trade to get women in to!). Home Jane has 25 tradeswomen working across the trades. The company takes on a variety of large and small projects, from full property refurbishments; kitchen and bathroom refits; to building flat-pack furniture and hanging pictures.

We are pleased to be welcoming Jo Behari, the company's founder and Wilenti Kuhn, one of their highly  trained plumbers. Jo will introduce her business to us and then, with the skilled help of Wilenti, provide us with some practical demonstrations on basic DIY skills for the independent woman! They will be delighted to answer all your DIY-related queries and will gives us some basic guidelines on the tasks we can safely tackle ourselves- and those we should leave to the experts!

The stall selling homemade baked goods, preserves, craft items and WI made well over £800- with £400 donated to our nominated local charity, the Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation- the remainder will help make our WI veen better!

CoreWellness– Pelvic Floors!

Ladies, Are any of you interested in taking part in a trial exercise programme designed to strengthen your pelvic floor? The programme is called the Pelvicore Technique (free DVD available from www.corewellness.co.uk) is designed to help women of all ages strengthen their pelvic floor muscles and regain core control. The exercises also improve posture, help tone and flatten tummies and also improve your sex life: they can be done in any position and are suitable for women of all ages and abilities.

The Pelvicore Technique is a range of exercises created by professor Kari Bo, an exercise scientist and physiotherapist specialising in women’s health. The DVD is part of a Europe wide campaign called CoreWellness which aims to get women back in control of their bodies and feeling confident They are looking for around 8-15 women between the ages of 30- 58 to take part in this pilot study. You will need to take part in the exercise lessons, held in Fulham (location to be agreed with you) and follow a physical therapist for around 3-4 classes. The rest of the time you will need to follow the DVD at home, in front of the TV, doing exercises every day for around 10-15 minutes, for the next 3 months. While you are doing the exercises, you will need to keep a diary every week to record your progress and any improvements you’ve noticed in your pelvic floor strength/control etc. You will have the support of a physical therapist to help you with any problems or answer any questions. Your diaries will remain anonymous so you can write honestly and openly about your progress. They’re looking to start this pilot study as soon as possible so, if you are interested in taking part, please contact Ruth Delacour at ruth@roadcommunications.co.uk.

FWI July Meeting: End Violence Against Women Campaign & the Importance of Having A Will

Lisa Jones of Dawson's Solicitors: Domestic Violence

This year the NFWI is running a campaign highlighting the issue of violence against women (and children) in the home. Domestic violence accounts for nearly a quarter of all recorded violent crime in England and Wales and one in four women will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime. Historical figures show that on average, a woman is assaulted 35 times before her first call to the police. These statistics prove just how difficult it is for victims of domestic violence to take the steps they need to be safe.

A Home Office report from 2002 found domestic violence to have a higher rate of repeat victimisation than any other crime. Many women do not know what legal remedies exist to protect them. Lisa will talk about the legal steps which can be taken by women who are victims of domestic violence and explain how the police and the family courts can protect women and children at risk of harm.

Domestic violence is not just as problem for the poor, uneducated and unemployed. It is a problem which affects women from all classes and backgrounds; even high-flying business women and 'domestic goddess' housewives can find themselves caught up in abusive relationships. Lisa's talk will highlight the need for greater awareness and understanding of the causes and effects of domestic violence if the cycle of abuse is to be broken. Spousal abuse and battery are used for one purpose: to gain and maintain total control over the victim. Lisa will look briefly at the tactics used by abusers to exert power over their wives and partners in addition to physical violence.

Charlotte Davies: the Importance of Having a Will

Charlotte, of Equus Estate Planning, is coming to explain to us the importance of having a properly drafted and up-to-date will. She will show us how this is one of the easiest ways to ensure that your family are provided for, and how it also enables you to leave gifts to any charities or organisations that are important to you. If you have children or other dependents, a will allows you to choose a guardian to care for them if you were to die before they reached the age of 18.

Writing a will may seem like a depressing subject(!) but it is one that we shouldn't ignore. Charlotte will be dispelling commonly held false beliefs (such as common-law marriage) and bringing us up-to-date on the significant changes to inheritance tax legislation that have taken place over the past few months.
