Dr Carlo Palmieri- Breast Cancer: What is the present and what does the future hold?
Dr Carlo Palmieri is the holder of a Clinician Scientist Award from Cancer Research UK and is currently a senior lecturer in medical oncology at Imperial College London and an honorary consultant in medical oncology at the Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust. A member of the International Cancer Collaborative Group (ICCG), Carlo is involved in the development of clinical trials in breast cancer. His research is focused on the molecular mechanisms that determine sensitivity/resistance to endocrine therapy in breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the most common female malignancy in the economically developed world, and the incidence is increasing worldwide. The treatment of breast cancer involves multiple types of treatments including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone treatment (e.g. tamoxifen) and targeted treatment (e.g. herceptin). Carlo’s talk will explain what the risk factors for breast cancer are, how breast cancer is diagnosed, what the current treatment options are for early breast cancer and what the future holds for new treatment.
